How BRLT Plans to Do It

The creation of the Ocean Point Preserve, a picturesque oasis for wildlife habitat open to the public for low impact recreation, will require a multiple-year $375,000 capital campaign. This New Campaign Goal reflects a $50,000 reduction in acquisition price! Costs include the land purchase price, plus transaction fees, stewardship requirements and a contribution to the general BRLT endowment.

A capital fund committee has been formed, chaired by Jim Dun, former BRLT treasurer, and an Ocean Point resident. Other committee members are Dick Colten, Joan Fischer, Allen Johnson, Dick Palmer and Peter Panagore, all Ocean Point residents. Nat Wing, BRLT Vice President and chair of the land trust's grants committee, is heading an effort to solicit foundation support.

Once the property has been acquired, the land trust plans to improve existing trails for controlled public access consistent with preserving habitat. A small parking area on Van Horn Road will be improved to accommodate a maximum of three vehicles.

BRLT hopes that the general Boothbay community, in addition to Ocean Point residents, will pitch in to help reach the $375,000 goal. One-time donations, or pledges to be paid over two years, may be sent to BRLT Ocean Point Preserve Fund, PO Box 183, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538. Checks should be made payable to BRLT.

Anyone with questions is invited to call Julie Lamy, BRLT executive director, at (207) 633-4818, Jim Dun, or any of the capital campaign committee members.
