Penny Lake Preserve is a freshwater wetland with adjoining woodlands and a field. The preserve includes a 19-acre parcel purchased from the McKenneys, a 10-acre parcel donated by Tom and Richard Wilson, a 25-acre conservation easement donated by St. Andrews Village, and trail easements donated by Steve and Richard Malcom, and St. Andrews Village. Situated in Boothbay Harbor near the schools, the YMCA, and St. Andrews Village, this wetland provides significant wildlife habitat for migratory and nesting birds, as well as for turtles, beaver, deer, moose and a wide variety of plant life. In 2005, the land trust completed a bridge across the Penny Lake wetland and an ADA compliant trail, accessible for wheelchairs and strollers, between the parking area behind the Boothbay Harbor Chamber of Commerce office and Emery Lane. From the bridge, visitors may observe wildlife on Penny Lake. Penny Lake Preserve is dedicated to the memory of Jack Heald, a giving and thoughtful person who daily expressed his love for family, friends and nature. His family contributed substantially to the purchase of the McKenney property. Funds from the Land for Maine’s Future Program, US Fish and Wildlife’s North American Wetland Grant, Fields Pond Foundation and contributions from numerous generous donors helped the BRLT purchase both the McKenney parcel and Lobster Cove Meadow, another significant wetland in Boothbay Harbor. The State of Maine’s Department of Conservation Recreational Trails Program and BRLT Capital Campaign donors funded the ADA compliant trail.
